Hull end brave Wigan challenge

Hull FC overcame Widnes Vikings 32-18 to book themselves a Challenge Cup quarter-final spot. The Super League side were only marginally better than their National League One opponents and this game was still very much up for grabs until late converted scores for Willie Manu and Adam Dykes.

Dykes also got proceedings underway, scoring after five minutes to establish a lead for the visitors.

After his score was converted, Widnes hit back through a Bob Beswick try before Hull regained the lead on 22 minutes when Todd Byrne caught Richard Whiting's pass to easily score in the corner.

Michael Burnett scored four minutes later to put Hull further ahead but Widnes' Lee Paterson then crashed over with Gavin Dodd kicking the extras to keep the Vikings in touch.

Straight after the break Richard Whiting caught a Widnes bomb, broke through the line and ran 40 metres before offloading to Hall who outpaced Ian Hardman to score in the corner.

The Vikings would not surrender though and when Dean Gaskell put Rob Draper through for a try it was game on but converted scores for Willie Manu and a second for Dykes ended Widnes' hopes and sent Hull into the next round.

Hull FC head coach Peter Sharp said:" It was a very very tough game of rugby league and I am pleased we came away with a win. The guys had to work hard and all credit to them for that."

Widnes boss Steve McCormack added:" I'm very proud that we went toe to toe with them. For 70 minutes we were right in it but we gifted them good field position at times and the ball too much. I am full of praise for all of them."
