Late drama sees Leeds oust Quins
Jamie Peacock broke the hearts of Harlequins with a winning try three minutes before full time for Leeds Rhinos in the fifth round of the Challenge Cup. In a breath-taking game at The Stoop, Quins came back from 24-4 down to score 22 unanswered points in the second half before Peacock went over.
"That was one hell of a cup tie," Leeds coach Brian McLennan said. "It was close and Harlequins played very well. It was hot and in the second half we had a lack of possession but we hung in there."
But only just. On the back of two defeats Quins started sluggishly and tries from Ben Jones-Bishop, Danny McGuire and Scott Donald took the visitors to 18-4 at the break, with Tony Clubb scoring in reply.
Rhino's scrum half McGuire then dropped on Matt Diskin's kick before the London club began their fight back. Two tries each for Danny Orr, captain in the absence of injured Rob Purdham, and Henry Paul took Quins to 28-24 with 18 minutes remaining.
But Great Britain captain Peacock powered over before McGuire scored his third and final try of the afternoon at the death and Kevin Sinfield converted his sixth goal in a perfect kicking display.
"The lads are pissed off," offered Harlequins coach Brian McDermott. "We have been outstanding for three weeks and we are frustrated not to be winning. I don't think Leeds stepped off the gas at all but we stepped up."
Meanwhile, Hull KR ran in eight tries in a 42-22 thrashing of Huddersfield, while a hat-trick from Semi Tadulala helped Bradford ease past last year's runners-up Catalan Dragons 46-16.
Elswhere, there were heavy wins for Oldham at Dewsbury and for Wakefield at Barrow.
