Care plays himself into England contention

Danny Care played himself into contention for an England tour spot but was unable to stop Harlequins slipping to an agonising Premiership defeat to Leicester. Tom Varndell's 76th minute try completed a remarkable Tigers' comeback that saw them claw their way back from 28-17 down with 12 minutes left on the Welford Road clock.

The win secured Leicester an unexpected play-off spot and left Quins needing Bath to beat Worcester in the Challenge Cup final to give them a route into Europe next season.

Care, who outplayed his England scrum half rival Harry Ellis on Saturday, looks certain to be named in Martin Johnson's England squad to tour New Zealand which is announced tomorrow.

"I haven't really been thinking about England," said the uncapped 21-year-old.

"I've been focused on trying to get Quins into the top four. But it would be a massive honour if I could get picked for the tour.

"I'm gutted because we battled hard. We have had a great season though. No-one expected us to feature the way we have."

Wasps romped into the play offs with a comfortable 45-28 win over relegated Leeds.

The win completes a remarkable transformation in fortunes for Ian McGeechan's men, who won nine of their last 10 league games to set up a home semi final against Bath.

"It was a fantastic performance under the conditions," said McGeechan.

"'We have the smallest squad in this league and it has been a major effort to achieve what we have."

Former England flanker Richard Hill hinted at a future in coaching after signing off his career with a 25-20 win for Saracens over Bristol.

"It's good to go out on my own terms and I'm sure in my life I will be involved in rugby," Hill said.

"At this stage I don't know at what level, or where it is going to be."
