Charvis omitted from Wales tour squad

Colin Charvis is the surprise omission from Wales' squad to tour South Africa this summer. Coach Warren Gatland has left the 35-year-old Newport Gwent Dragons star out of his squad despite being deprived of a number of stars, including Martyn Willimas, with Charvis thought to be the natural replacement for his openside flank spot.

Elsewhere, Gatland's Grand Slam winners are boosted by the news that Mark Jones and Shane Willimas are fit to face the world champions, while Andrew Bishop, Warren Fury and Bradley Davies are all included for the first time.

But Gatland insists he has full faith in his side and has played down the injury crisis that sees Alix Popham, Dwayne Peel, Gavin Henson, Lee Byrne and Mike Phillips all miss out.

"I've heard people talk about our so-called injury crisis but apart from Martyn Williams, we can just about put out just the same forward pack we put out during the Six Nations," insisted the former London Wasps coach, who has a 100% record in charge.

"I'm disappointed with some of the injuries but I've confidence in the other guys in the squad to come in and perform on the biggest stage."
