Federer and Djokovic win in Hamburg
Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic have cruised into the semi-finals of the Hamburg Masters. Both the world number one and three won in straight sets, and Djokovic will overtake Rafael Nadal and become world number two if the Spaniard fails to win his quarter-final against Carlos Moya.
Federer has had a fine season so far on clay, and continued this form with a comfortable 6-3 6-3 victory over Fernando Verdasco, who complained afterwards of a foot injury which hampered his game.
But Federer felt it made little difference to the difficulty of the tie: "It was a tough match," he said.
"He has a perfect game to upset anyone on any surface. He was aggressive with his backhand and he surprised me. It took me a little time to adjust to a lefty."
Djokovic, meanwhile, took a step towards his second consecutive title, having won in Rome last week, and barely broke sweat in beating Albert Montanes 6-2 6-3.
Djokovic will face the winner of the Nadal-Moya tie, while Federer will play the winner of the game between Nicolas Kiefer and Andres Seppi.
