Ferguson: Ronaldo is staying - but maybe for only two more years
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has dispelled rumours that Cristiano Ronaldo is set for a summer move to Real Madrid - but admits the Portuguese may leave Old Trafford in two years' time. The 23-year-old, who scored 42 goals as United won the Premier and Champions Leagues, has refused to commit his future to the club in recent days.
And with Madrid admitting they would love to sign Ronaldo, Ferguson was bombarded with questions about the subject in his first press briefing back in England after Wednesday's Champions League Final triumph over Chelsea in Moscow.
Ferguson insists Ronaldo will stay at the club for the time being - and has admitted that the challenge to keep him will be defined by United's continual success in Europe.
"The simple fact of the matter is that he has four years left on his contract and he is happy here," said Ferguson.
"You get used to it (speculation) with Madrid.
"Of course, the players you want to keep, you have to work hard to keep. That is a fact in the modern era.
"He is 23, when he gets to 25 or 26 he will have a big decision to make. That will be our biggest task when he gets to that age.
"It's about how we become and how big we are then in terms of European trophies. That European success will resonate with him.
"That's why I make the point about us striving to be better at winning European Cups."
