Half of the 2008/09 Champions League field now known

After Celtic's victory in the race for the Scottish Premier League title, exactly half of the 32 teams who will compete for next season's Champions League are now known. There will be at least two debutants looking to take Manchester United's crown from them: Romanian champions CFR Ecomax Cluj and Russia's UEFA Cup winners, Zenit St Petersburg.

Out of the remaining 16 teams who will attempt to negotiate their way through the third qualifying round of the tournament, there are four debutants: FC Twente, of Holland, Belgian side Standard Liege, Bulgarian's CSKA Sofia and Vitoria Guimares, of Portugal.

Four former winners - Manchester United, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and FC Porto - join at the group stage, while another four previous champions - Liverpool, Marseille, FC Barcelona and Juventus, will enter at the third qualifying round.
