Thompson hangs up boots after Leeds fail to reach Championship
Former England, Bolton, Aston Villa and Celtic midfielder Alan Thompson has announced his immediate retirement from professional footballer, and hangs up his boots after his current club, Leeds United, failed in their bid to gain promotion to the Championship.
The 34-year-old free-kick wizard, who was capped once for England against Sweden in 2004, has not played since Leed's 1-0 win at Swindon on March 1.
But he was part of Gary McAllister's squad for the Coca-Cola League One play-off final, which they lost 1-0 to Doncaster Rovers.
Thompson scored 107 goals in 551 career appearances spanning 17 years and said: "I've had a good career but I've decided to call it a day.
"The high point was playing for England but I've got plenty of good memories. I'm going to take a bit of time out now but I would like to stay involved in the game."
On his time at Leeds Thompson said that it had been enjoyable. He added: "I had hoped to have played more of a part and it was disappointing to finish on a low at Wembley."
