Anichebe makes Super Eagles starting debut

Everton's Victor Anichebe made his starting debut for Nigeria in their 1-1 draw with Austria on Tuesday. The young Everton forward, who had scored on his U-23 debut after snubbing an international career with England, followed that up with an impressive half for the Super Eagles.

The 20-year-old striker, who moved from Nigerian capital Lagos to Toxteth as an infant, began up front alongside Everton team-mate Yakubu Aiyegbeni, while Joseph Yobo, also of the Merseyside club, was also in the starting XI.

Austria took the lead in the 12th minute when Roman Kienast was on target, but then, in the 20th minute, Yakubu played in Kalu Uche who levelled the scores.

Anichebe was replaced at the break as coach Shaibu Amodu looked at his options, with the Yak also replaced in the second period.

The Super Eagles now head from Austria to Nigeria ahead of Sunday's World Cup qualifier against South Africa.
