Top seed Sharapova 'lucky' to edge past Evgeniya
French Open top seed and new world No1, Maria Sharapova, gave a less than convincing performance to overcome fellow Russian Evgeniya in the second round. Sharapova eventually won 6-1, 3-6, 8-6 but struggled in blustery conditions in Paris.
The Russian became world number one following Justine Henin's retirement.
In all she committing 68 unforced errors and 17 double faults, gifting 19-year-old Rodina three break points at 4-3 in the deciding set. Sharapova , however, found her serve when it counted.
Sharapova, who only needs to win the French Open to complete a full set of Grand Slam titles, said: "I was very lucky to win.
"She served well after the first set and I didn't break her until the end of the third set.
"Not many things were working for me today after the first set."
