Defoe: Portsmouth transfer crucial to England hopes

England's two-goal hero Jermain Defoe believes his January transfer from Spurs to Portsmouth has helped him to re-establish himself on the international stage. Defoe capped an impressive all-round performance with two predatory strikes in Sunday's 3-0 win over Trinidad and Tobago.

They will have boosted his chances of figuring in Fabio Capello's future plans, and he said: "I'm still learning and when a new manager comes in you all start at the same level.

"I will keep working hard, I finished the season strongly and I couldn't be happier with my move to Portsmouth and I'm delighted with my goals.

"I enjoyed tonight and the last game against America at Wembley. It was important to win and I'm so pleased to get two goals.

"We have been together a long time together as a squad but you can't complain because to play for your country is the best thing in the world. The lads have all gone through hard season but we are still here fighting and it's been great."
