Calzaghe leads sporting names in Queen's honours list

Joe Calzaghe heads the sporting names in the Queen's Birthday Honours list after receiving a CBE for services to sport and voluntary services in Wales. The champion boxer, who already has an MBE, is joined by rugby legends Lawrence Dallaglio and Bill Beaumont, while Northern Ireland striker David Healy has been given an MBE.

Calzaghe, won recently beat Bernard Hopkins to extend his unbeaten run to 45 professional fights, says he has been knocked out by the award.

"For the first time in my life I was knocked out," said Calzaghe.

"It's unbelievable when I think back to when I was a kid that one day I would have achieved so much through boxing, and my teachers laughed at me when I said I was going to be a boxer."

Dallaglio, a member of the England team that won the 1999 World Cup, recently retired from rugby and has been awarded an OBE.

Beaumont, who already holds an OBE, has been awarded a CBE for his work with rugby's Wooden Spoon charity.

"I was fortunate enough to receive an OBE for playing the game in 1982, and now 26 years later to get this award for other things which I have managed to achieve makes you feel very humble," he said.

Healy, who is Northern Ireland's all-time record goalscorer has been rewarded for his work with the George Best memorial Trust.

"I've been to Buckingham Palace before to see the changing of the guard as a tourist," said Healy.

"But to go there as the guest of the Queen will be amazing. I'm already nervous about it."
