Del Piero eyes Spain scalp
Alessandro Del Piero is backing Italy to recover from a tough start at Euro 2008 to beat Spain in the quarter-finals and go on to be crowned champions. The World Cup winners suffered a nightmare start to their campaign when they were thrashed by Holland and held to a draw by Romania but the Juventus star insists his side are back to their best.
Legend Del Piero says there is a steely belief in the Italy squad that they can achieve something special in Austria & Switzerand despite the views of their critics.
He said: "Yes we believe because there's just three matches, but very tough matches, very hard matches to go. I don't know what's happened but now we are in a great situation and we hope to take everything to go to the final."
Italy will have to do it the hard way against Spain, however. They already without injured captain Fabio Cannavaro and now have Andrea Pirlo and Gennaro Gattuso suspneded for the quarter-final.
"These things sometimes happen, unfortunately," said Del Piero. "Cannavaro has been out since the start of the tournament and the other two just for one match. We hope only for one match and we hope to win the match this time with other people. We have players to make a good eleven."
