McGeady in demand
Newcastle are ready to trigger a Tyne-Wear tug-of-war with Sunderland over Celtic winger Aiden McGeady. Black Cats boss Roy Keane has placed the £10m-rated Republic of Ireland star, 22, among his top targets.
But Toon rival Kevin Keegan, back from holiday this week, is understood to be weighing up a counter bid.
Ex-Arsenal strike starlet Anthony Stokes, a Celtic target before joining Sunderland for £2m 18 months ago, could be used as a makeweight in a McGeady deal.
But Keane still rates Stokes, 19, as a major prospect and is reluctant to let him go.
Keane, willing to spend big on Spurs' Darren Bent and West Ham's Carlton Cole to cushion the blow of losing striker Kenwyne Jones with knee-ligament damage, is also looking at Real Zaragoza midfielder Peter Luccin.
The Frenchman, 29, will be available on a free if the Spanish side agree to release him from his contract.
