Newcastle to reject Milner bids
Newcastle United will resist any move for England Under-21 winger James Milner. Liverpool and Aston Villa are interested in the one-time Leeds prodigy but Newcastle have yet to receive a firm offer for 22-year-old Milner and sources close to the club maintain they would not welcome any approach.
It means that the Magpies appear to have cooled their interest in Milner's former Leeds teammate, Tottenham winger Aaron Lennon.
Milner is under contract at St James' Park until 2011. He was on loan with Villa in season 2005-06 and was poised to join them in a permanent deal until being recalled at the last minute after Middlesbrough blocked a move for striker Mark Viduka, who ended up on Tyneside less than a year later.
Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez can trade midfielder Danny Guthrie and defenders Jack Hobbs and Emiliano Insua, but Newcastle aren't interested.
Toon boss Kevin Keegan hopes to have more scope in the transfer market by selling striker Shola Ameobi to newly-promoted West Brom for £3m.
The former England Under-21 international has returned from honeymoon and Keegan wants a deal done quickly.
Meanwhile, Newcastle have appointed ex-Liverpool and Fulham defender Richard Money as academy director. Money's last job was as Walsall boss, and he was also academy manager at Coventry and worked with young players at Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest.
He said: "This is a fantastic opportunity for me, a really big challenge. I have a lot of experience of working with young players, so this is a job I'm well qualified to do.''
