Tottenham expected to raise Capel bid

Tottenham are expected to make an improved offer for Sevilla winger Diego Capel after their original £12.5m bid was turned down. Juande Ramos is desperate to strengthen his squad during the summer and is keen to bring the 20-year old to White Hart Lane.

Ramos worked with Capel when he was coach at Sevilla and believes he could become a major star in the Premier League.

Capel has a buy-out clause in his contract but Sevilla president José María del Nido insists it only applies to Spanish clubs and that Tottenham will have to make a vast offer if they want to secure his signature.

Del Nido said: "He has a clause in his contract which is only valid for a Spanish team. We do not negotiate with any figure less than that. Tottenham made a superior bid and we said no.

"Determined clubs know that the buy-out clause of the player is there.

"Tottenham have made an offer superior to that and we have said no, because it was not close to the amount that Sevilla believe that the player is worth abroad, where, we believe, the buy-out clause does not apply.

"It is a question to discuss, is legally debatable and that is why we responded negatively."
