Johnson: Nightmare New Zealand tour could be key to glory
Martin Johnson believes last month's nightmare New Zealand tour could hold the key to future England glory. England's Kiwi trip was labelled "the Tour of Shame" after an allegation that four unnamed players sexually assaulted a lap dancer in Auckland after the 37-20 first Test loss.
To make matter worse, England then got walloped 44-12 in Christchurch a week later to cap off a miserable fortnight for the tourists.
But England's new rugby supremo says events on and off the pitch will help his side in the long term because rugby life will never get harder than the New Zealand experience.
Johnson said: "All the personnel on the tour now know what it's like to play top-level Test match rugby.
"Two matches against the All Blacks in Auckland and Christchurch is as tough as it gets.
"It's not going to get any more difficult for those guys than what happened in the second week of that tour.
"Some guys had limited Test match experience yet competed very well. They're not inexperienced now - they've done the hardest possible tour."
