City 'optimistic' they will sign Ronaldinho

Manchester City are 'optimistic' of having an all-Brazilian front line next season as they continue their pursuit of former World Player of the Year Ronaldinho. The club confirmed the signing of Jo from CSKA Moscow for a club record fee, believed to be worth around £19m, on Wednesday.

Their pursuit of Ronaldinho from Barcelona to partner Jo up front is well advanced, although executive chairman Garry Cook admits there are 'complexities' to any potential deal for the 28-year-old, who is said to be interesting both Chelsea and AC Milan.

And Cook insists Ronaldinho could be the next piece of the jigsaw as owner Thaksin Shinawatra looks to create 'a new era' at the club.

"We are in the hunt and have been talking to them (Barcelona) on (a) regular basis," said Cook.

"We will continue to do so until we feel it is not right to bring the player to the club or he decides not to come. We know it is a competitive market place.

"There are some complexities (to a possible deal) that you don't normally associate with signing a player.

"Although there is long way to go, we are optimistic. Any great player is welcome here as this is a growth club.

"We are on a journey and are not going to stop until we create a new era."
