Mascherano called up to Argentina Olympic squad

Liverpool midfielder Javier Mascherano has been called up to Argentina's Olympic squad. The 24-year-old has been named as one of three over-age players in Sergio Batista's squad and will miss up to a month of Liverpool's season from late July.

And that may increase the club's desire to secure the services of Aston Villa midfielder Gareth Barry, who has been at the centre of a transfer tug-of-war all summer and is set to leave Villa Park. Also named in Batista's 18-man squad are other high-profile players, such as Barcelona's Lionel Messi, while Juan Roman Riquelme and Nicolas Burdisso are the over-age players in the defending champions' line-up.
