Gloucester suffer Qera injury blow
Gloucester's bid to improve on last season's Guinness Premiership semi-final spot has suffered a major blow after flanker Akapusi Qera was ruled out for six months after undergoing surgery to repair his damaged Anterior Cruciate Ligament. The Fijian was superb in his debut campaign in England and came third in the Player of the Season award.
The operation has been declared a success but is a bitter pill for Gloucester coach Dean Ryan, who saw No. 8 Gareth Delve suffer the same injury on Wales' tour of South Africa last month.
"Akapusi's impact on the Premiership last season was tremendous and he produced a number of world class performances so to lose him to an injury of this significance is an obvious blow," said Ryan, whose side topped the Premiership table but then lost to Leicester Tigers as their season imploded last term.
"To be without him and Gareth Delve because of similar injuries is extremely disappointing for us but both will be in great hands at the club and we wish them all the best for their recoveries.
"But we have an outstanding squad and it will provide opportunities for other players to stake their claims for selection."
