Benitez: Agger loss cost Liverpool title shot
Rafael Benitez claims the loss of Liverpool's Danish defender, Daniel Agger, cost his side their chance of a shot at the Premier League title last season. Agger missed most of 2007/2008 due to a broken metatarsal early in the season as the Anfield side finished 11 points behind winners Manchester United.
But while Benitez has moved to solve the problem by signing Martin Skrtel, he admits the loss of the Dane - who has returned to pre-season training fully fit - turned a number of potential wins into draws.
"We missed Agger - I think it cost us too early in the season," Benitez told Liverpool's official website.
"We conceded goals at the end of games which finished as draws because Sami Hypia and Jamie Carragher were playing too many games in a row."
"He (Agger) is a centre-back but good on the ball and a threat to the other team too."
