Rookie Gardner the hero as Yankees beat Red Sox

Brett Gardner was the unlikely hero as the New York Yankees beat the Boston Red Sox 5-4 in their Major League Baseball clash. The 24-year-old, who made his debut for the Yankees just seven days previously, singled home the winning run in the tenth inning to the delight of the near 55,000 crowd.

Gardner started in the left field due to an injury to Johnny Damon and proceeded to get the better of Red Sox closer Jonathan Papelbon thanks to a fielding error - much to his delight.

"That's awesome. Something I'll remember for the rest of my life," he said. "It's definitely an unbelievable experience.

"I was talking to the ball. I was trying to talk it up the middle. As soon as I saw him get some glove on it, I was like, `Oh, no. He's going to knock it down.' But it squirted away."

Papelbon was distraught at seeing another game slip away: "Seems like that's what's going to happen if you're going to beat me this year: broken bat or find-your-way-through-the-infield somehow," Papelbon said.

"I've got to be able to go out and get the first guy."

It was an amazing play, for sure, but we are Red Sox people around here so were not so pleased by it! ;)
