Philadelphia Phillies reward Lidge for fine form
The Philadelphia Phillies have rewarded closer Brad Lidge for his fine form in the first-half of the season with a new, $37.5m three-year contract extension. The 31-year-old is 2-0 with 19 saves so far this season, and would have been a free agent at the end of it.
And having not allowed an earned run during his first 17 appearances, the second-longest run by a Phillies pitcher to start his career with the team, Lidge has been handed the bumper deal, which includes a club option to make it worth $49m over four years.
Both Lidge and assistant general manager Ruben Amaro Jr were delighted by the move.
"I knew right away this would be a good opportunity for me to play for a team that is competing every single year to get to the playoffs and win a World Series," said Lidge. "That's a huge factor for me."
"This is a player that's on top of his game and certainly we believe in him long term," agreed Amaro Jr. said. "We felt it was important for us to move forward on it."
