Given: I could spend rest of my career with Newcastle
Shay Given has indicated that he could be ready to spend the rest of his career with Newcastle. The Republic of Ireland goalkeeper, vying with Steve Harper for the No 1 spot on Tyneside, is reportedly a target for Arsenal.
But Given, 32, played down talk of a move to the Emirates Stadium, insisting: "I don't know where the story came from. I've said all along that I'm extremely happy living and playing here in Newcastle.
"I want to help to move this club forward and hopefully we'll get new players in and strengthen the squad. We want to get this place going.''
Given is battling back to fitness after a near-two-year injury nightmare which began when he underwent emergency surgery after suffering a perforated bowel in an accidental clash with striker Marlon Harewood at West Ham in September 2006.
That led to recurrent groin problems which forced Given to undergo another operation last season.
But he stressed: "I'm just raring to go and ready to play football again. It's been a long close season and it was a long end to the season as well.
"I was working on fitness towards the end of last season and continued that throughout the summer. I feel as fit and strong as I have ever felt.
"I've done a lot of rehabilitation with the physios and been in the gym. Now I'm just ready to get back out on the field.
"I only had a bit of a break, but even when I was away I was doing my work and training.
"I'd had a break after I had an operation, so my aim was always to get fit for the start of pre-season, not the end.''
