St Helens given permission to build new stadium

St Helens have been granted planning permission for a new 18,000 capacity stadium without the need for a public enquiry. The new stadium should now be opened in 2011, and is hoped to bring massive regeneration to the town.

The 46-acre former United Glass site will be redeveloped into a £25 million stadium, with a Tesco Extra supermarket attached.

Saints chairman Eamonn McManus said: "This is excellent news for the club and its supporters.

"We are now looking at an identifiable timeframe and have avoided the onerous costs of a central government call in.

"This is another important hurdle out of the way and we look forward to the work and challenges ahead.

"The future of the club and of the town is looking very healthy indeed."
