Green Bay tell Favre they will do 'what's right' after release request

The Greed Bay Packers have told Brett Favre they plan on doing 'what's right' in response to his latest attempt to come out of retirement. The 38-year-old retired in March after a 17-year career with the franchise but on Friday asked Green Bay to release him so he can sign a contract with another NFL team.

Green Bay are committed to having Aaron Rodgers, who was Favre's understudy for three years, as their starting quarter-back next season.

But in a statement that emphasised Favre's contribution to the franchise, Green Bay made it clear they were surprised by his decision to return, saying they only wanted to do "what's right and in the best interest of the team."

It read: "Brett earned and exercised the right to retire on his terms," the team's statement said.

"We wanted him to return and welcomed him back on more than one occasion. Brett's press conference and subsequent conversations in the following weeks illustrated his commitment to retirement.

"The finality of his decision to retire was accepted by the organization. At that point, the Green Bay Packers made the commitment to move forward with our football team."

It continued: "As with all Packers greats, Brett's legacy will always be celebrated by our fans and the organization, regardless of any change in his personal intentions.

"Brett and Deanna will always be a part of the Packers family."

If he already retired from the Packers and they have "made the commitment to move forward" then what's the big deal? They should let him go assuming another team wants him.

Why in the world did he retire if he was just going to go back to work? Well he didn’t stay retired very long, did he? I agree with Mistic, he made his choice he should stick with it.

I think it should be a choice for him and the team, maybe they are just being too nice about things here. Hes a grown man right? Do your doings and doing think that others will make choices for you.

I agree with the last poster. He made his bed, now he needs to lie in it!
