Cavendish wins second stage of Tour de France

Mark Cavendish produced a stunning sprint finish to win stage 8 of the Tour de France - and in the process became only the second Briton to win two stages of the Tour in the same year. Cavendish won the fifth stage on Wednesday and repeated the trick in Toulouse.

The Isle of Man rider emulates Barry Hoban, who won two stages on the Tour in both 1969 and 1973.

But Cavendish, who claims to be the fastest man in the world, paid tribute to his team, with colleague Gerald Ciolek finishing second.

"It was brilliant, you saw how well the team worked," said the 23-year-old, whose team-mate, Kim Kirchen, holds the yellow jersey.

"To hold on to the yellow jersey and get a one-two finish; it does not get any better.

"After the first half of the stage the climbs were not too bad and, with the team around me, I had the best possible protection. It worked out amazing.

"Today was the last stage that we could control and then win."
