Betfair Sports Review

by Gambling.com™

A name you're sure to have heard if you've ever had a punt, Betfair is currently the world's biggest peer-to-peer betting platform. The Australian site is even more unique, as it's the only place you can bet this way in the country.

Founded in the UK, the company has a pretty interesting approach, in that all the odds on the site are margin free. The company instead takes commission on net winnings – possibly a mixed bag, but it does mean you'll never be capped if you're on a roll. Read on for a more detailed overview.

Betfair Mobile Betting Site & App

The main desktop site is very detailed and has lots of info, which can be a bit tricky to get to grips with on a smaller mobile screen. Luckily, the site does have a dedicated mobile app for both Android and Apple devices called Exchange+. You'll need to download it directly from the Betfair site, but it's certainly worth it.

The app features all the graphs, stats and market info you need to take a punt or keep an eye on races.

User Experience

If you haven't used a sportsbook or similar site before then Betfair might seem a little overwhelming initially. The home page drops you straight into the action, and you can find a selection of highlighted markets and odds in the centre of the screen. It only takes a few moments to get the feel of things though, and the simple black and yellow colour scheme means clutter is kept to a minimum.

The most popular sports are easy to reach via a menu bar at the top of the screen, and you can also use a left-hand table to select the markets you want at any time. You can also access the Betfair Hub, which is very useful for new members. There, you'll find comprehensive guides, information and analysis – a handy tool and not something you find on every site.

Betfair Bookmakers Odds & Prices

The most popular sports are easy to reach via a menu bar at the top of the screen, and you can also use a left-hand table to select the markets you want at any time. You can also access the Betfair Hub, which is very useful for new members. There, you'll find comprehensive guides, information and analysis – a handy tool and not something you find on every site.

That said, while you can often find some pretty good odds on the more common markets like football, horse racing or greyhounds, the same isn't always true for more niche areas. If you're placing some stakes on politics or handball for example, then chances are the odds aren't going to be any better than anywhere else. This is due to customer demand – less popular markets will therefore always have worse odds.

Betting Options at Betfair

It's hard to fault Betfair's betting options. Given the wealth of information you can find on the site itself, it's also a good place to start if you're not too familiar with your chosen market, or betting in general. There are plenty of live betting options too, which you can easily access from the right-hand side of the screen, as well as a generous selection of markets and sports to choose from.

It's also possible to save your favourite markets so you can jump to them easily every time you log in.

Support and Banking

The Betfair support team is available 24 hours a day, and you can contact them by telephone or email. The lack of any live chat is a bit disappointing, but on the plus side if you call the team between 8am and 10pm you can ask for a live demo of most aspects of the site and betting exchange.

Banking wise, there aren't loads of deposit and withdrawal options, but the essential ones are all there. You can use Visa, PayPal, Neteller or Skrill to handle your transactions with the site. The back and lay system does also mean you can often cash out any winnings before an event has finished.

Our Verdict

The interesting peer to peer approach here has some very noticeable advantages – mainly that odds on popular markets are always likely to be lower than competitor sites, and the fact that Betfair take commission on winnings rather than odds. It's also a very easy to use site, and has an extensive section packed full of guides and tips for individual markets.

The only downsides here are that due to how the site works, less popular markets won't really benefit from better odds. Also, the fact this site isn't a bookmaker means it might take a bit of getting used to if you're more familiar with standard sportsbooks.

ProsCons
Great odds on popular markets Odds on smaller markets are not great
Easy to use Non-traditional approach may put some punters off
