Timing is everything in the sports betting world, and one Betfair Sports customer now knows the true value of making the perfect move at the perfect time after scooping £53,000. An unnamed punter at Betfair's online bookie recently executed what industry insiders are already calling the "greatest cash out of all time", after he cut short a 22-game accumulator just in the nick of time.
Many major operators, including Betfair, now allow their customers to ‘cash out’ during accumulator bets rather than wait until the conclusion of the last event. This move has not only increased the amount of accumulators being placed online, but given savvy punters the ability to exercise more control over their bets and, ultimately, more control over their potential win rate.
That's exactly what Betfair's lucky customer – identified as a man in his late twenties – did last week, after placing a bet on 22 football matches in the UK and Europe. Despite the odds being stacked against him, the punter was in line for a potential jackpot of £1.5 million if the predictions were correct.
As is often the case with accumulators, things started well for this bettor and, with 14 results going his way, the system offered him £25,000. Fancying his chances of a better offer, the customer refused the offer, only to watch in horror as Manchester City went 1-0 down to West Brom. The unlikely score line was one the customer certainly wasn't expecting and, as the minutes ticked by, the tension grew.
Fortunately, City pulled it back in the second half and secured the win, but it was over at Loftus Road where the real drama took place. Banking on a home win for QPR against Charlton, the punter had to wait for 94 minutes before the former found the back of the net to take the match 1-0. With virtually no nails left on either hand, the customer eventually decided to call time on his wager after 16 successful predictions.
Accepting a cash out offer of £53,000 just minutes before the next match (Barcelona vs. Real Sociedad) kicked off, the punter sat back and raised a wry smile as the 17th result went against the formbook.
Despite Barcelona being tipped as heavy favourites against Real Sociedad, Luis Enrique's men failed to score and left the pitch with a disappointing draw. Had the customer refused the £53,000 offer from Betfair prior to the Barcelona match, he would’ve lost everything.
"This is the mother of all cash outs, with the customer correctly predicting that Barcelona weren't going to do the business against Real Sociedad," said Betfair's Football Trader, Michael Bowers.
As yet the man hasn't made himself known to the media, but if there's a right time to reveal himself then it's likely he'll know exactly when to do it.
