A lucky Irishman has bagged himself a late Christmas present this week, after his €20 accumulator bet came in to the tune of €451,082.47 during an exciting weekend of matches in English football. The lucrative thirteen game accumulator win means the lucky punter will soon be living the 'Life of Riley'.
The anonymous winner managed to successfully predict eight wins and five draws in various tiers of the English football divisions. In the English Premier League, Manchester United managed to beat Norwich 1-0, while rivals Man City scored the same result over Crystal Palace. There were more comfortable wins for Everton, beating Southampton 2-1, and Tottenham, who demolished a poor Stoke City side 3-0. Arsenal completed the Premiership set by seeing off Newcastle 1-0, while in the Sky Bet Championship, Leicester managed to overcome Bolton during an electrifying 5-3 win. Likewise, Huddersfield also managed to put five goals away during an impressive 5-1 dismantling of Yeovil, while the last win came from Nottingham Forest, who beat a strong Leeds side 2-1 with a lucky goal.
However, it was one of the games that the punter had marked down for a draw, Sunderland v Cardiff, which must have proved the most nail biting. The Welsh team went into the game flustered after the backroom drama between sacked manager Malky Mackay and owner Vincent Tan, yet it did not seem to affect play on the pitch. Cardiff were leading the Black Cats 2-0 until the 83rd minute, until Scotland’s Steven Fletcher managed to slip one by David Marshall. It was well into the fifth and final minute of injury time, when a deflected goal by midfielder Jack Colback brought Sunderland level at 2-2. His equaliser, twelve seconds before the referee blew the final whistle, managed to save bottom of the league Sunderland some dignity, while also securing the Irishman’s fortunes. His other draws were Aston Villa v Swansea and Bournemouth v Ipswich, both with one goal apiece, as well as goalless draws in Doncaster v Millwall and Watford v QPR.
