2015 British Grand Prix Betting Preview

SHARE

The British Grand Prix always proves to be one of the highlights of the Formula One calendar. Lewis Hamilton will enjoy being back on home soil for the event, but can he hold off the challenge of his Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg to win the race? And will any other driver be able to dent the dominance of the Mercedes duo at Silverstone?

The Home Advantage

Heading into the race, Hamilton leads Rosberg by ten points in the drivers' championship standings after eight races. That is enough to make the British driver favourite to win at the iconic Northamptonshire circuit (he can be backed at 4/7 with Betway Sports), but Rosberg has been victorious in three of the last four races. The German took first place at the most recent Grand Prix in Austria, as well as crossing the line first in Monaco and Barcelona.

Rosberg is priced at 2/1 with Coral Sports and it seems that Hamilton is well aware of the threat posed by his team-mate. The reigning world champion told reporters during the build-up to the first practise sessions that he is expecting a "hard weekend" because Rosberg will be "very quick".

Hamilton can take encouragement from last year's British Grand Prix, however, where he managed to win the race from a starting position of sixth on the grid (Rosberg was forced to retire following a gearbox failure). The 30-year-old is seeking his third F1 victory at his home circuit, having also won at Silverstone in 2008.

Another factor that could work in Hamilton's favour is an adjustment to his car, with the engine problem that reportedly caused his poor start at the Austrian Grand Prix now fixed.

The Rest of the Field

It's very difficult to look past the Mercedes pair for the race winner, but it's likely that their closest competition at Silverstone will come from the Ferrari or Williams drivers.

Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel is third favourite in the betting market, with a price of 16/1 at Coral Sports. The German may be an unlikely winner but he looks a good bet for a podium finish – he finished second in Monaco, third in Spain and is the only driver other than Hamilton and Rosberg to win a Grand Prix this season (he picked up maximum points in Malaysia back in March). Vettel is 2/5 with Betfred Sports to finish in the top three at Silverstone.

Valtteri Bottas of Williams also has strong claims for the podium. The Finn picked up a third-place finish at the Canadian Grand Prix in June and also has form at Silverstone – he was runner-up to Hamilton last year after moving up from 14th on the grid. Betfred Sports makes Bottas a 5/1 shot for a podium finish in this year's race.

Elsewhere, Kimi Raikkonen's performance on the track should provide another fascinating sub-plot. The 2007 world champion is currently under pressure at Ferrari following a couple of high-profile errors. He missed out on third place at the Canadian Grand Prix due to a spin on lap 27 and was forced to retire in Austria after he lost control of his car and crashed into Fernando Alonso's McLaren.

Having effectively been told he must show an improvement in form in order to remain with Ferrari for the 2016 season, Raikkonen will be hoping to answer his critics with a strong result at Silverstone. The 35-year-old is 3/1 at Winner Sports to finish on the podium.

In the drivers' championship betting, Hamilton is still strongly fancied at 1/4 with William Hill Sports to pick up another world title this year. Rosberg, who certainly hasn’t given up on surpassing his team-mate in the standings, can be backed at 10/3. Ready to back the Mercedes drivers, or think your bet is best placed elsewhere?
