Australian Open 2019 Men’s Semifinals: Two Bets to Consider

The Australian Open is down to the last 4. The #1 and #2 seeds are still alive, and two rising stars have stamped their names on the world stage. There might be one more duel between legends in the final, but the men’s side is seeing a new generation begin to take the place of the old guard.

Tennis betting odds are long for the young players, but we’ve already seen the tournament’s young Greek sensation topple Federer in a stunning upset. There’s nothing that says that we couldn’t see one or both legends fall in the semifinal and add a further twist to Australian Open betting this year.

Novak Djokovic vs Lucas Pouille

If you picked Pouille to make the semifinal of the Australian Open, hats off to you. The 24 year-old Frenchman has been one of the biggest surprises of the tournament, despite being seeded at #28. This marks his first trip to the semifinals in a major tournament.

Pouille earned one of the biggest wins of his young career over the #11 seed Borna Coric in the round of 16. Overcoming the monster serve of Raonic is no joke either, a serve that helped Raonic overcome the tournament’s #4 seed Alexander Zverev. Of course, he now faces his toughest test of his career, in the form of a well-rested Djokovic.

Despite Federer, Zverev, and Anderson making early exits, it’s been business as usual for the world #1. The Serbian entered the tournament as the top seed and has continued to play like it. His path to the final remains unimpeded after Kei Nishikori retired in the second set of the two’s quarterfinal match, allowing Djokovic to be significantly more rested going into his match on Friday.

The Serbian’s favorite tournament continues to be the Australian, one that he’s won 6 times previously. Djokovic’s focus might be on the semifinal, but he’ll also be thinking about clinching his seventh Australian Open title, and third major title in a row, winning Wimbledon and the US Open last season.

Djokovic is a massive 1/18 favorite over the Frenchman, who’s being offered at 10/1. Betting on the moneyline probably won’t win you much because it’s likely that Pouille’s run ends here. However, odds on Unibet give Pouille a huge +8.5 game cushion for 4/7. Take Pouille to cover, but don’t expect the upset.

Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Rafael Nadal

It’s still stunning to think that Nadal has only won the Australian Open once in his career. His love of clay is well documented, winning all but three French Opens since 2005. He’s reached the final of the Australian Open four times, only winning once.

Before the tournament, Nadal fell from the favorites after pulling out of warm-up tournament Brisbane International. In response, the Spanish legend hasn’t dropped a set the entire tounament. He cruised over American Cinderella Francis Tiafoe and looks to continue his good form against one of the game’s most promising young stars.

Of course, this could be another chance for the legend of Stefanos Tsitsipas to continue to grow right in front of our eyes. The pure emotion of knocking off Roger Federer didn’t go to the head of the 20 year-old Greek, who defeated Roberto Bautista Agut in four sets to reach the semifinal.

The maturity shown by the young man has been impressive to say the least. It’s no mean feat to take down the greatest player of all time, but it’s almost more impressive he held his nerve in a match that could have been a very easy emotional letdown match for the young Greek.

He’s probably not watching the betting lines, but Tsitsipas is a 21/5 underdog, roughly the same as he was against Federer, and Nadal is favored at 1/6. Can he take down another all-time great? Nadal might be playing some of the best tennis of his career, but only the smartest players take down Federer. Go in on Tsitsipas to pull off another upset on Unibet.
