Did Trends Win Last Year's Foxhunter Chase?

As with all big-field contests at the Cheltenham Festival, the Foxhunter Chase is a formidable test of the 10 and 15-year trends - 2018 was no exception.

The shortlist of Balnaslow, On The Fringe, Pacha Du Polder and Unioniste, managed to highlight the winner and a 7th place in the 24-runner staying chase.

Previous winners Pacha Du Polder and On The Fringe made the line up because they clearly fitted the Key Foxhunter Chase trends, though On The Fringe was ageing at 13, and had been beaten aged 12 too.

Nevertheless, he was on the trends shortlist, finishing 9th, Pacha Du Polder winning and Balnaslow taking seventh. The Paul Nicholls-trained Unioniste had won plenty of chases, including at Cheltenham, and had even been fourth in the RSA Chase. He finished 10th, priced the shortest of the four in the Cheltenham betting at 12/1.

How Pacha Du Polder won 2018's Foxhunter Chase

On his fourth visit to the Cheltenham Festival, the 11-year-old Pacha Du Polder retained his Foxhunter Chase crown, despite jockey Harriet Tucker dislocating her shoulder during the race.

It was Pacha Du Polder's third run in the Foxhunter Chase, winning under Bryony Frost in 2017, and finishing fifth for Victoria Pendleton in 2016, and was to prove his most thrilling.

  1. Pacha Du Polder 25/1
  2. Top Wood 50/1
  3. Barel Of Laughs 14/1
  4. Cousin Pete 66/1

Sent off at a huge 25/1, the Paul Nicholls-trained victor was well off the pace in 10th position turning the bend for home, but as he met the rising ground he began to stay on through beaten horses.

Bold leaping out of Harriet Tucker's hands at the last, he landed upsides the long-time leader Top Wood and a nail-biting head-to-head ensued, Pacha Du Polder prevailing by a neck - the same margin as he had won by 12 months earlier.

His jockey Harriet Tucker later revealed that she had ‘half dislocated her shoulder’ as the field approached the second-last, and reinserted it herself, while still riding.
