Why Punters Should Not Back Hamilton at British Grand Prix

The 2017 British Grand Prix is revving up its engine ready for the off on July 16, but will Lewis Hamilton be able to snatch a vital win on home tarmac despite his recent form? For those interested in British Grand Prix betting, and moreover Formula One as a whole, Hamilton has to be one of the favourites.

With the crowd on his side and three Silverstone wins in the last three years (2014, 2015 and 2016), he clearly loves the racing conditions here. However, with Germany's Sebastian Vettel currently leading Hamilton in the Driver's Championship table, it looks as though the Brit won't have it all his own way on Sunday.

In fact, with Vettel already notching up three wins and four runner-up spots (from nine races) this season, the race is anything but a forgone conclusion! Read the rest of this guide for all the best betting tips and expert analysis punters need to find value bettting the British Grand Prix 2017!

Hamilton vs. Vettel

Naturally, this level of uncertainty will make the race a spectator's dream. However, for those into Formula One betting trying to size up some British Grand Prix odds, making the right pick won't be easy. Indeed, according to bookies at the top-rated sports betting sites, Hamilton and Vettel are leading the way in the odds charts, too.

At this point, Hamilton has a fairly comfortable lead over Vettel with bet365 offering odds of 8/11 on a British win, while NetBet has set a betting line of 20/27. From these numbers, it's clear the bookmakers are backing previous form at the British Grand Prix. For you as a punter, taking a similar line wouldn't be the worst idea in the world.

Four wins at Silverstone, including three in a row, is a hugely impressive feat.In fact, only one other driver has managed a trio of consecutive wins and that was Jim Clark back in the 1960s. This clearly shows that Hamilton is a special talent when it comes to the race and quite rightly the favourite with F1 betting experts.

Form Isn't on Hamilton's Side

However, as impressive and important as previous results are, there's also something to be said for current form. While few will question Hamilton's credentials when it comes to the British Grand Prix, it's clear he's not having the best of seasons. Sure, three wins is equal to that of Vettel, but it's the results around these wins that could raise a red flag.

A seventh-place finish in Monaco is flanked by two fourths and a fifth so far this season. These results seem to suggest that Hamilton is struggling with consistency this year. Of course, as is often the case in Formula 1, mechanical failings can cause a drop-off in results and to be fair, that seems to be Hamilton's issue.

When he finished seventh in Monaco, a recurring tyre problem on his Mercedes caused him to lose grip throughout the race and give up vital seconds to the leaders. Despite working with the engineers, it seems as though this problem isn't going away and this could prove particularly troublesome at Silverstone.

With sun never guaranteed, Mercedes and, therefore, Hamilton could find grip becomes an issue once again. Should this happen, we could easily see a repeat of what happened in Monaco. Naturally, Hamilton will be fighting to ensure it doesn't, but the qualifying rounds will be the time we know more.

Qualification Could Be Where Things Are Won and Lost

At bet365, you can currently get 8/13 odds on Hamilton being the fastest to qualify. This certainly isn't a bad bet, but we'd leave this alone and look at a potential punt on Vettel at 3/1. Online betting is all about finding value, and tyre issues for Hamilton could provide an opening for Vettel to sneak in and take pole position. So why not bet on Vettel to win the race instead? Well, this is obviously an option.

However, the first thing to note is that the odds on Vettel getting the outright win are slightly worse at 9/4. Secondly, qualifying is a slightly different atmosphere and Hamilton may be able to overturn a small deficit in the main race better than he can in the qualification rounds. Finally, and this is the important point, the qualifiers will be the first time Hamilton will really test his car on the track in race-like conditions.

Even with all the work behind the scenes and a ton of pre-testing, the team can never be 100% sure how the car will perform on the day. A small slip during his rounds could give Vettel the chance to steal a march before Mercedes rectify any faults. Indeed, by the time race day actually comes, Hamilton could be sitting in a car that's perfectly tuned for the race. So, if there is a chance for an upset and some Formula One betting value, this could be it.

Whatever happens in the 2017 British Grand Prix, we know it's going to be a high-octane race. Whether you're looking through the best online betting sites for the bookmakers' odds or you're just watching from the rail as a fan, there's no doubt it will be another classic Silverstone Grand Prix come July 16.
