Chris Moorman continues to carve out a career as one of online poker's biggest names, with his total winnings recently surpassing a record-breaking $13 million (£9.2 million). The 30-year-old UK native reached these momentous new heights after he won $18,809 in one of 888 Poker's Sunday Challenges earlier this month.
Moorman explained afterwards that he had been “about $50,000 away for a while”, and that “it was nice to go over the line with a win”. What makes Moorman’s performance in the Sunday Challenge all the more impressive is that he triumphed over a field of 777 players (probably to due to 888's ownership of the budding 777 Casino), proving that he still consistently has the edge over fellow online gamers.
The player thought to be Moorman's closest online competitor, who goes by the name of P0cket00, is still $4 million behind in all-time earnings. And playing catch-up will be no easy feat for P0cket00, considering that Moorman surpassed $10 million back in September 2013.
Moorman's ambition seems to grow with each million-dollar milestone that he reaches. After passing $12 million in February 2015, Moorman stated that his longer-term target was to hit $15 million. Given his recent success, this figure could feasibly be achieved in the next couple of years, but Moorman is pacing himself, asserting in a recent post-tournament interview that “$14 million comes first.”
Moorman went on to explain what drives his consistent level of performance;
“It’s just little targets that keep me motivated… I need to set myself goals.”
And it doesn't sound as though Moorman has any plans to slow down his online playing in favour of more traditional methods:
“...live poker’s just not as exciting. It’s more exciting when it gets deep”.
Moorman may be feeling less enthused by live poker at the moment, but it's worth noting that he doesn't excel any less in this arena. This was proven when Moorman won his first major live poker tournaments at the 2014 World Poker Tour LA Poker Classic, finishing top in a 534-strong field to win $1.015 million (£710,000).
Moorman demonstrated his live qualities when he stepped up from second place to overcome chip leader Michael Rocco on the final day. The determined champion battled through multiple lead changes before facing Glenn LaFaye heads-up for the tournament crown.
Moorman's LA victory was enough to push his live winnings past $4 million, giving him more than $17 million in combined career earnings for live and online tournaments. Moorman’s live TV tournament entries have included Aussie Millions, the European Poker Tour, and the World Series of Poker (WSOP).
Moorman’s various legendary performances have helped secure his fourth-place position on the Internet Poker Wall of Fame, though he'll need to continue to enter live tournaments if he hopes to be considered for the WSOP Hall of Fame. An entry would place him alongside greats such as Doyle Brunson, Phil Hellmuth, Johnny Chan and John Juanda.
Any poker players interested in competing against a champion like Chris Moorman (who plays under the username WhatWudJSay) should go to 888 Poker now and check out the many daily tournaments.
