The ten-event Chicago Poker Classic (CPC) is now in its seventh year, and according to Poker News, in 2015 it proved to be more popular than ever. One person who certainly left on a high note was Illinois-based poker player Zal Irani. He managed to rise to the top of 2,296 players in the first event: the $360 No-Limit Texas Hold’em Poker tournament, which took place at Horseshoe Casino in the neighbouring state of Indiana.
The first session stretched out over two days as thousands of poker players battled it out for a slice of the $684,208 cash pot, with just five percent of players making it through to day two. Yet it seems fitting that Irani won in the casino he considers home, bagging himself $100,000 as well as winning a seat the CPC Main Event, which has a buy-in of $2,000.
The Horseshoe Casino is the financial planner's home patch; not only is it his local casino, but he has made an impressive 15 cash wins there since turning pro in 2012. The CPC event was the ninth time he had reached a final table at the Horseshoe, while his ultimate victory made this his third six-figure cash score at the casino.
Irani previously came fifth in the 2012 WSOP Circuit $1,675 Main Event, receiving $104,371 for his troubles, and the following year he was a runner-up in the CPC $350 No-Limit Texas Hold’em Poker match, netting $104,275. After adding his most recent win, he has amassed total winnings of $717,637 in his lifetime.
Speaking after his latest monumental success, Irani said: "I couldn't pick any other place I'd want to play. Las Vegas in the summer is fun for the World Series [of Poker], but coming into [the Horseshoe], honestly it reminds me of playing football in high school. I walk in here and it feels like home. I couldn't ask for anything better. It's hard not feeling pretty confident being in this place."
