Sun Chariot Stakes Betting Tips: Bet On This Favourite

Quick Tips
Laurens and Wind Chimes head the Sun Chariot Stakes betting this weekend, but will either claim the autumn highlight for female milers?
First held in 1966, the Group 1 is named after the filly who completed the British Triple Crown in 1942. This year’s line up is lacking anything of that calibre, the season’s best miler of any sex Alpha Centauri absent, but that does mean the market is wide open.
Market Leaders
The top bookmakers find it hard to split Laurens and Wind Chimes, each vying for favouritism in the Sun Chariot Stakes betting. Laurens is a best-priced 11/4 with Bet365 after beating the mighty Alpha Centauri in last month’s Matron Stakes at Leopardstown.
It was a third Group 1 success of the season for the Karl Burke-trained star, and a first over the Sun Chariot Stakes distance of 1m. She has shown her battling prowess in the past, but concerns arise when considering the number of hard races she has had this season, including when finishing runner-up in the 1000 Guineas.
That was over this course and distance, back in May, and with that in mind it may prove profitable to look elsewhere for a bet, namely at Wind Chimes.
Trainer Andre Fabre won the Sun Chariot Stakes three years ago when his five-year-old Esoterique came good, and his representative this year, Wind Chimes, is trading at 5/2 with 10Bet.
Her only classic outing this year came when finishing a neck third in the French 1000 Guineas at Longchamp, but she has taken a Group 3 over this 1m trip at Deauville since, building up to a career-best effort in the Group 1 Prix Du Moulin.
There, the daughter of Mastercraftsman, who runs in the purple of Derrick Smith, was beaten a head by 23/10 favourite Recoletos. That Longchamp run confirmed she is up to this level and for me she looks the one to beat. Take the 5/2 now.
Each-Way Value
Trainer Sir Michael Stoute saddled Peeress (2005) and Integral (2014) to take the Sun Chariot Stakes in the colours of Cheveley Park Stud and they are represented by Veracious this time.
A maiden winner over 7f at Newmarket last October, the daughter of Frankel made her 2018 debut when third in a Group 1 at Royal Ascot. Stepping up to 1m2f, she was beaten two lengths in another Group 1 at Goodwood in early August and then put in her most impressive performance when easily taking a Group 3 event over 1m distance at Sandown.
A half-sister to the top class Mutakayyef, her trainer knows what it takes to win these big autumn races, and with the ground and trip both in her favour, it’ll be interesting to see if she can make the step up in grade. At 5/1 with Betway, Veracious looks a very decent each-way bet.
The O’Brien Challenge
Clemmie, a Group 1 winner over 7f at Newmarket in September last year, is as big as 7/1 with 888Sport, having disappointed over this trip twice in the spring. Sticking to a mile, she has fared much better on her two most recent starts.
The latest of which was when two-lengths third to Laurens in the Matron Stakes, but she still looks likely to find at least one too good. Trainer Aidan O’Brien has won the last two renewals of this race with a three-year-old and fields two alternatives to Clemmie this time.
Shortest in the betting is I Can Fly at 9/1 with Black Type. She was an easy Leopardstown Group 2 winner last time out, but had previously disappointed in the 1,000 Guineas. She and stablemate Happily, who is as big as 20/1 with Bet365, are likely to play minor roles.
A Long-Shot Idea:
Billesdon Brook sprung a 66/1 shock in the 1,000 Guineas over this course and distance back in May. She has been held in two subsequent Group 1 efforts, including when having fourth at Royal Ascot in June - a day when out top betting tip Veracious finished third.
However, the drop back to this distance looks likely to suit her, the Richard Hannon-trained three-year-old having finished fourth over 1m2f at Goodwood in August. Given she is already a course winner at the highest level, her top price of 16/1 with BetVictor looks big and she is worthy of an each-way bet.
