Quick Tips:

Wimbledon, the third tennis Grand Slam of 2021, gets underway on Monday with Novak Djokovic defending his 2019 title after last year’s tournament was cancelled due to the Covid pandemic.

Djokovic came through an epic final against Roger Federer two years ago, taking a final set tiebreak after the pair were locked at 12 games apiece. The Serb is world number one again and arrives at SW19 fresh from his second Roland Garros triumph.

In the Wimbledon betting odds lists, Djokovic is the clear favourite at a shade of odds-on with the best bookmakers with Daniil Medvedev and Stefanos Tsitsipas next best at 7/1 generally.

Federer, weeks ahead of his 40th birthday, is a 12/1 shot with Betfair along with Matteo Berrettini who was 50/1 before his triumph at Queen’s Club.

Alexander Zverev, still seeking a first win over a top-10 player in Slams, is 16/1 and it’s 33/1 bar with Dominic Thiem ruled out by a wrist injury.

So that’s the Wimbledon odds in a nutshell, but who’s worth a wager? I do think Djokovic is going to be very hard to stop but I certainly couldn’t back him at the prices.

Medvedev and Tsitsipas have never performed well on grass previously while Federer’s age is a big negative, as is his lack of recent court time and form.

Berrettini would have been backable at 50/1 but his price has well and truly gone, and Zverev has failed to make the quarter-finals in five previous attempts. So we’re going to have to do some hunting at long odds.

With so few grass court events on the calendar these days, there are not many players who you would mark out as comfortable on the surface. But Wimbledon still favours big servers more than any other Slam, and that’s where we’ll look.

Each-Way Tips To Consider

Sam Querrey knocked out Andy Murray, then the reigning champion, to reach the semi-finals in 2017, his best showing in a Slam. He also sensationally upset Djokovic 12 months earlier.

The American has shown good form on grass so far this season. I must confess I thought he was older than 33 but he appears to be back to something like his best form, serving no fewer than 25 aces in his straight sets win over world number 10 Roberto Bautista-Agut in the Mallorca quarter-finals.

If I’d written this earlier in the week, you could have availed yourself of the frankly ridiculous outright price of 400/1. That went on Thursday, but you can still take 200/1 with BetVictor and I strongly suggest you do so for an each-way bet. Even with a tricky opener against Pablo Carreno Busta.

Quarter-Betting Quick Tips:

The same logic should apply to Querrey’s compatriot John Isner who reached the semis in 2018 before going out 26-24 in the fifth to another big server in Kevin Anderson. But Isner’s lack of activity since the French Open is a concern and I’ll leave him alone this time. I also considered another American, the giant Reilly Opelka, but his defeat to John Millman at Eastbourne leads me to think that he may not go too deep at Wimbledon.

My second outright pick is actually a lot closer to home. Cameron Norrie is enjoying his best season on tour and has been rewarded with a seeding at a Slam for the first time.

He has had some excellent wins this season on hard courts over the likes of Grigor Dimitrov, Fabio Fognini and defeated fellow Briton Dan Evans at the Australian Open.

On clay, he reached two ATP Tour finals – in Estoril and Lyon – upsetting Cristian Garin and beating a below-par Thiem. On the grass of Queen’s Club, he scored a superb victory over Denis Shapovalov before losing the final in three sets to Berrettini.

Norrie has an interesting opener against former quarter-finalist Lucas Pouille but, based on what he’s achieved so far this season and his strong recent form, his Wimbledon odds of 200/1 outright with Betfair are none too shabby for an each-way punt.

Overpriced Outsider

My last outright selection is Halle victor Ugo Humbert who also looks overpriced. After defeating Querrey and Zverev, the French left-hander avenged his Stuttgart defeat to Felix Auger-Aliassime before defeating Andrey Rublev in the final.

Humbert withdrew ahead of his scheduled rematch with Querrey in Mallorca this week but some extra rest before Wimbledon is no bad thing.

At 100/1 with William Hill, he is a much bigger price than Auger-Aliassime and his high ace count and booming forehand make him very interesting on grass. Like Norrie and Querrey, he is in the bottom half away from hot favourite Djokovic.

He will have to come out firing against Nick Kyrgios in the first round, but should be able to find his stride ahead of a possible quarter-final with Berrettini.

As far as Wimbledon betting specials markets are concerned, regular readers will know I am always keen to get stuck into the quarter-betting and this is no exception.

Unfortunately, Norrie and Querrey have both been drawn in the fourth quarter but I would not put you off backing both with the American a massive 28/1 with 888.

Humbert is 10/1 to win the third quarter. I’ve taken this although bigger prices may come elsewhere.
