US Open Tennis 2018 Betting

Betting Tips

The US Open is the last Grand Slam on each year’s professional tennis calendar. While Wimbledon is considered the most sought-after Slam title, the US Open is considered by some to be infinitely more exciting in terms of the venue and the incredible atmosphere created by a crowd that adulates each competing player. The competition is owned by the United States Tennis Association, with proceeds from ticket sales, sponsorships and television deals used to promote the development of tennis in the United States.

Excellent champions have battled it out for US Open glory over the years. Roger Federer, Andy Murray, Novak Djokovic, Rafa Nadal, Serena Williams and more have all featured. Betting on tennis has grown steadily over the years, and US Open tennis betting markets are now some of the most popular each summer. The event is held annually and starts on the last Monday in August, lasting two weeks into September.

The US Open market of tennis betting has seen a stark increase in recent years, as punters’ sporting interests increasingly turn towards tennis. When marking out a betting strategy for the US Open, keep up to date with previous tennis tournaments especially other Grand Slams and try to avoid favourites early on.

Tournament Information

The US Open is structured similarly to other Tennis Grand Slams, like the French Open, but is the only that employs tiebreakers in every set of a match. It is also the only Grand Slam tournament where the women’s draw has 16 qualifiers as opposed to 12.

The grounds of the US Open hold 22 courts. Four show courts, 13 field courts and five practice courts feature. The main court, Arthur Ashe Stadium, opened in 1997 and is named after Arthur Ashe, the player who won the men’s final in the inaugural tournament in 1968 - a final which has become more and more difficult to predict over the years.

Since 1978 the competition has taken place on a hard court surface named Pro DecoTurf. Classified by the ITF as medium-fast with slightly less friction and producing a lower bounce compared to other hard courts. The courts are completely resurfaced before the start of the tournament each year. When placing a bet on a player in the US Open, check out their recent performances on similar surfaces.

Popular US Open Tennis Betting Markets

Outright Betting | This is one of the simplest US Open betting markets. Pick whoever you think will win the competition (male or female). Bear in mind your choice’s recent performances, keeping an eye on Wimbledon in particular, the last Slam prior to the Open.

Set Betting | Betting on a set score is the same as betting on the final score in a football game. Value can often be found in set betting at one of the top tennis bookmakers. Keep an eye on unexpected starters and try to capitalise later in the tournament.

Match Betting |Narrowing a bet down to a specific US Open match-up can be a good way to make concise gambles. Like outright betting, take into account player performance and keep an eye on the surface the match is being played on. Since a draw is impossible in tennis the odds on favourites will often be extremely short. Accumulators are particularly popular for the US Open as a result of this.

Over/Under Betting | As competitive as the US Open is, it is possible to predict whether a match will end over or a certain amount of sets. This is a broader way of betting if you’re unsure which player will win a specific match.

Tips for Betting on the US Open

Knowledge is Power | It might seem simple, but make sure to do your research prior to betting on the US Open. Don’t always assume that big names will do well. If placing a number of different bets, try to stake low on underdogs to begin with, keeping an eye on their form.

Favourites Rarely Profitable | This is a rule of thumb, not only for your US Open betting strategy, but for sports gambling strategy of any kind. Seeking out rising stars is a good way of finding value. Playing it safe with the favourites may put a couple of wins under your belt, but it’s not worth your time in terms of profitability. Try to fade the public, especially if an out-of-form big name is taking on an unknown but decent competitor.

Never Follow Blindly | Never listen to US Open tennis tips (via word of mouth or online) without there being a reasonable and explainable basis on which to place the bet. If you’re betting with others you’ll often hear about ‘sure things’. Remember, nothing is ever a given in sports betting, and placing a bet on the US Open is no different. While tips can be useful it’s always worth betting independently and making the final judgement yourself.
