Hawks fans weren't the only ones celebrating after the grand final of the Australian Football League, when Melbourne side Hawthorn trounced the Sydney Swans by 63 points. That’s because one lucky punter managed to convert a $10 AUD bet into $100,000 AUD - just shy of £55,000.
The win came off the back of a year-long multi-bet; an accumulator that spanned the globe, it incorporated a number of different sports including A-League soccer and golf. The first result to clear was Ricardo Santos recording the lowest round one score during the African Open back in February, coming in at odds of 41-1. The second bet, also on the lowest score in a golf round, came in the same month when Dustin Johnson played the Northern Trust Open in Pacific Palisades, California. The American came through for the punter at lower odds of 23-1.
The third result followed in May, when Brisbane Roar beat Western Sydney Wanderers to win the A-League title. The extra time goal from Henrique Andrade Silva sealed the win for Brisbane at odds of 2.35-1. The Aussie gambler then had to wait all summer (or rather, winter) for the final result. Betting against another Sydney team at odds of 4.5-1, The Hawks tore the Swans apart with a final score of 21.11 (137) to 11.8 (74).The total odds across all four events added up to a staggering 9,972.22-1.
Bookmakers Tabcorp reported that it was the longest odds they’d ever offered on a multi-bet of this type. But despite his unique success, the punter has chosen to remain anonymous. His life changing win nevertheless encouraged many Australians to place a bet on another grand final – the National Rugby League title decider between South Sydney’s Rabbitohs and the Canterbury Bulldogs. It seems that the multi-bet maestro was wise not to add this event to his bet slip, as a Sydney team finally came out on top, winning 30-6.
