Big Team FA Cup Failures Reward Three Punters with Huge Wins

Many punters would resist the urge to bet against heavy-hitters like Man City and Chelsea, but the failure of those title-chasers to progress in the FA Cup saw at least three lucky punters win big on Cup accumulator bets this week. According to the Mail Online, one of the three bets was a five-fold accumulator for only £2, which ended up being worth an incredible £36,000.

It was a weekend of shocks, which saw Man United held to a goalless draw by League Two minnows Cambridge. Their city rivals were unceremoniously dumped out of the Cup chase by two goals to nil. Ironically, one of the goals came from striker Patrick Bamford, who is on loan from Chelsea.

Chelsea could have used Bamford’s magic touch in one of the most unlikely defeats in the history of the FA Cup. Chelsea were in a comfortable 2-0 lead against Bradford in the first half with goals from Gary Cahill and Ramires, before Bradford’s Jon Stead pulled out what many believed to be a consolation goal just before half time.

In what was a game of two halves, Bradford kept on the pressure until a flagging Chelsea side started making drastic mistakes, allowing three goals in the last 15 minutes. Despite the referee’s generous eight minutes of extra time, Chelsea failed to respond.

The results, in what the BBC has dubbed "the most open FA Cup competition ever", were the right ones for the other brave punters who bet against the big teams. One punter was so confident in their combined loss that he put £100 on Middlesbrough and Bradford to win, netting him a whopping £29,000.

Another five-fold accumulator paid dividends for its owner, who bet on Bradford and Middlesbrough to win along with Leicester, Crystal Palace and Derby, picking up a cool £24,000 for his calculated efforts, when the latter three teams beat Spurs, Southampton and Chesterfield respectively.

This trio of gamblers will no doubt see the irony in Man United now being made favourite to win the Cup, despite being held to a draw against Cambridge. The League Two side will now enjoy a replay at the Theatre of Dreams, where no doubt many a cheeky bet will be made against the reds for better odds.
