A 33-year-old Cambridgeshire man is celebrating a fantastic accumulator win after a £1 bet returned a jaw-dropping £169,923 this week. The Cambridge News reported that the incredible bet was one of the initial wagers made through the man’s first ever bookmaker account, which he opened with William Hill Sports a week earlier.
The winning bet was only the eighth made on the account, which the winner set up to save for his son’s future. “My partner and I had a son five months ago and last week we set up a William Hill account and deposited £20,” said the winner, who has chosen to remain anonymous. “The intention was to place two £1 bets every so often on the football and any winnings would go into a savings account for him. We have only placed eight bets. We will certainly be giving him a large chunk towards his future but we also plan to buy a house with some of the winnings as well.”
The £1 bet was made on a 10-game accumulator, with all games happening in League One, including Crawley’s 5-1 demolition of Barnsley, Gillingham’s exciting 4-2 win against MK Dons, and Leyton Orient’s well-fought 3-2 victory over Chesterfield. He had also bet on Sheffield United to beat Bristol City, Crewe to beat Fleetwood, Doncaster to take victory over Yeovil, and Peterborough to triumph over Rochdale. Scunthorpe luckily managed to punish Swindon 3-1, while Colchester and Port Vale pulled through 1-0 against Oldham and Walsall respectively.
The odds of the ten games combined amounted to an amazing 169,923/1, which are the second biggest winning odds in the bookmaker's long history. When the win was discovered by the company, a William Hill spokesperson said: “A few years ago, we had a Maltese punter who turned €1 into over €500,000 and this guy, with his incredible win, has moved into second place on our list of biggest ever football winners.”
