One lucky Liverpool fan not only watched as her team trounced Arsenal 5-1, but she also won £150,000 at the same time. Great-grandmother Geraldine Hughes had placed a £2 bet in the Totepool Scoop6, a pool offered by Totesport based on televised horse races that accumulates each week. While Geraldine and her family gathered around the TV to watch Liverpool send Arsenal packing, she kept abreast of her bets via live text. With the first five results going her way, the channel was changed to watch the last leg of the final race.
However, she thought ready to tear her ticket up when her choice horse, Rigoletto, had an early start, bursting out of the stalls. She explained, “When mine burst out of the starting stalls before the race I thought I had lost. But it was withdrawn and classed as a non-runner so my ticket automatically went on the 5-2 favourite My Kingdom and that won. It was fantastic and I've not been able to sleep since the win.”
Geraldine also revealed her secret for singling out her winning selection of stallions – picking those with “nice names,” including Splash of Ginge. “I only picked that as my brother Paddy had a lovely mop of red hair when he was a boy,” said Geraldine. While her brother’s hair colour is not usually associated with luck, it certainly helped here, with the odds on Splash of Ginge at 33/1 providing her with her biggest winner out of the pool.
The mother of six, grandmother of 19 and great grandmother of four will certainly be able to spoil her enormous family with the winnings, but there could be more coming her way. Geraldine is able to have a free pick at the bonus fund, which has been rolling over since August 2013. If she manages to choose another winner to follow her original six, she could net herself and her loved ones over £700,000.
