Clarets fan and lifelong horse-racing punter Dave Parsons performed a magic trick worthy of David Blaine, turning a £7 bet into a £47,000 winning pot. The 51-year old, who once held a stake in a racehorse named Rumcay, managed to pick four winners in the Cheltenham Gold Cup to secure his prize.
Like most horse-racing fans visiting the bookies, Parsons has been playing for decades hoping that one of his stubs would come up trumps. Asked about the win, he said, “I kept saying ‘I will get it one day’ – most punters do. But Friday morning I went in with £20 in my wallet and by Friday afternoon I had £47,000 in my pocket. It is absolutely amazing. It has not sunk in yet.”
The man they call Dave placed his bet on day four of the Cheltenham Festival, betting on:
The lucky punter watched as the first two choices breezed through the track, but when Very Wood managed to come first in the Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle ahead of favourite Deputy Dan, it guaranteed Dave a win of £1,400. He had to wait two and a half hours to listen to the outcome of Savello in the Johnny Henderson Grand Annual Chase Challenge Cup Handicap, but his patience paid off, with his pick beating joint favourites Ned Buntline and, ironically for a Burnley fan, Claret Cloak.
“I could not believe what the commentator was saying when Savello was coming through to win,” recalled Dave, reliving the moment that he won a life-changing pot of cash. “Can you imagine being sat at home and winning £47,000? I ran out into the street screaming. I had to get someone I knew to check it was real.” Given that Dave’s last win was only £2,800 over 16 years ago, his reaction is understandable. The fortunate fellow revealed that he is going to pay off his mortgage before deciding what to do with the remaining £30,000.
