In just over a year’s time, residents of Scotland will take to the polls to give their opinion on whether the country should remain a part of the UK, or break away from their southern neighbours and go it alone.
Whilst many organisations including the councils of the Scottish Islands of Shetland and Orkney have recently came out in favour of a “Yes” vote, a number of other celebrities couldn't resist having their two pennies' worth. Former Scotland international football manager Alex McLeish is strongly backing the “No” vote, saying he is “passionate about Scotland being part of the United Kingdom.”
Ex-Man United manager Alex Ferguson is another high-profile figure backing the "Better Together" campaign, and all this uncertainty is creating a whole host of lucrative betting opportunities.
With the ongoing battle between the SNP and the Coalition Government set to heat up over the next few months, Coral Sports is now taking bets on the outcome of the vote. Their predictions seem to be largely in McLeish’s favour, with a “No” vote coming in with odds of 2/9, and the “Yes” camp trailing at 3/1.
The political betting doesn't stop there, though, with Coral Sports also giving out odds on whether Scotland will achieve complete independence by 2020, regardless of the outcome of 2014's in-out referendum. The "No" votes are still leading here , compared to the optimistic "Yes" odds.
