First played in 1946, this tournament is one of the PGA Tour’s favorite stops for a number of reasons. The first is its long-term connections with the great Ben Hogan, but the host club also has does much to do with the fondness both players and fans have for the event.

Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas, was built 10 years before the tournament started and is a traditional classic that has held up in the modern age. All of this said, you might be feeling a little confused because the tournament has changed sponsor throughout its history and in recent years at a dizzying rate.

In fact, this is the fourth change in just five years, but fans of PGA Tour betting be assured, the Charles Schwab Challenge is a new name, but the event remains essentially the same.

The Course

Colonial is a par-70 boasting many dog-legged fairways which cut through the trees to small bent grass greens.

“This course is all about precision,” Jhonattan Vegas said last year. “There is nothing power around this place. It’s about thinking your way round.”

“It’s an old school golf course,” added Jon Rahm before somewhat contradicting Vegas. “There are so many different ways to play it here. You can play it like I do and hit drivers all over the place and be aggressive. Or you can play it conservatively.”

And Matt Kuchar is far from being the only player to make the following observation: “It’s tight, it’s tree-lined, it requires all shots and it requires you to work the ball both ways. One of my favorite weeks of the year is Harbour Town, and this is not dissimilar.”

The Winner’s Profile

Recent winners tend to back up the standard notions of the course. Last year Justin Rose claimed top spot, and he’s a winner at tight-andttesting Hong Kong and Valderrama, as well as a US Open champion at the traditional Merion.

Two years ago Kevin Kisner took the honors, and he’s on paper as saying it’s a perfect set-up for his short-hitting, accurate game. Jordan Spieth (2016 winner) is Texas born and bred with wins on traditional and strategic courses.

The 35-year-old struggled on defense of his title last year, ending the week T52nd, but before that he had finished fifth and 10th ahead of his 2017 win. He missed the cut in the PGA Championship but that was no great surprise because the length of Bethpage Black was always going to count against him.At a track he likes (Austin CC) he won the WGC Dell Technologies Match Play in March and at another (TPC Louisiana) he was T5, so he’s performing when the conditions are in his favoor this season. “It’s a lot like a course I grew up on,” he said of Colonial last year. Could this be the week that the South African finally gets a win on American soil? There’s sneaky evidence that it’s a possibility. At first glance he was only T60th last week in the PGA Championship, but he was T10th at halfway.

Go a few weeks further back and at Innisbrook in the Valspar Championship and he was second, on a course Justin Rose and Boo Weekley have played well ahead of wins here. Go a few months back and we see his win in the South African Open, on another tree-lined and traditional track.

Final piece in the jigsaw? He was fifth here last year, an effort which included a fine third-round 64. Bet him at +3300 with Betfair.

Matt Fitzpatrick

This will be the Englishman’s tournament and course debut, but there is plenty of reason to believe that he’ll find the challenge right up his street.

The first factor is the test’s similarity to Harbour Town, which he counts as one of his favorite on the schedule. The second is a look at where he has played his best golf. He has a win at Woburn, two wins at Crans-sur-Sierre and two seconds and a third in Hong Kong – all examinations along the same lines as this week.

He was also second at Bay Hill this season, and both Kevin Kisner and Adam Scott thrived there ahead of their Colonial wins.

Since that second in Bay Hill he has made poor starts before playing some excellent golf later in the week, most notably in the Masters (67-68 in rounds two and three) and last week in the PGA Championship (a round two 65).

On a layout that suits, if he can get off to a solid start, odds of 50/1 with Karamba will look good.
