Did Trends Win Cheltenham's Last Festival Cross Country Chase?
With last year's winner Tiger Roll coming in to the Cross Country Chase off the back of a second Grand National victory, he had to go on the trends shortlist.
The 10-year-old had ticked all the boxes a year earlier when romping to his second win in the race, having been sent off at 5/4f in the 2019 Cheltenham betting odds.
He was denied his hat-trick by French raider Easyland, who despite being the youngest every winner of the 16-year-old race at age six, was a trends pick.
Apart from his age, he fit the key trends relating to stamina, Cheltenham form, and cross country form. He also brought by far the best form into the event, having won a Key Race over course-and-distance in December, and the first leg of the Crystal Cup at Pau last time out.
His age was a concern, making Tiger Roll a more solid selection, but there were no other horses that could be considered.
Third Out Sam had been highly tried over marathon distances, but well-beaten in the majority of his runs over more than 3m1f. Last time out Punchestown winner Neverushacon lacked stamina, and 2016 hero Josies Orders performed better on better ground that presented at the 2020 Cheltenham Festival.
If you followed the key trends regarding stamina, Cheltenham form and cross country form, those were the only runners that would have caught your eye.

How Easyland won the 2020 Cross Country Chase
Easyland took the lead with 10 obstacles left, and stayed on strongly to give France a first win in the Cheltenham Cross Country Chase.
The six-year-old also became the race's youngest ever winner, and broke many hearts as jockey Jonathan Plouganou rode him to a 17-length win over two-time Grand National hero Tiger Roll, who had been seeking a third-successive Cross Country win.
4.10 CHELTENHAM - 2020 Cross Country Chase Result

- Out Sam 33/1
Winning trainer David Cottin went on to win the Crystal Cup, a points-based league, with points accumulated in a series of cross country races throughout Europe. Cheltenham's test is second on the annual calendar.
Tiger Roll's trainer Gordon Elliott also saddled the third, Out Sam, who was beaten 18 lengths by Tiger Roll.
