How Laurina won 2018's Dawn Run Mares' Novices' Hurdle

Unbeaten since joining trainer Willie Mullins the previous autumn, Laurina was sent off the 4/7 favourite and duly obliged by 18 lengths.

Ridden by Paul Townend, she was in fact rated 3lbs inferior to the Stuart Edmunds-trained Maria's Benefit, despite winning a maiden hurdle and Grade 3 by a combined 26 lengths.

But the Cheltenham betting told the full story, and the five-year-old followed the script, cruising into the lead before the last hurdle and powering away up the famous hill.

4.50 CHELTENHAM - 2018 Dawn Run Mares' Novices' Hurdle Result

  1. Laurina 4/7f
  2. Cap Soleil 10/1
  3. Champayne Lady 80/1

She continued her trainer's strange-hold on the three-year-old race, with Cap Soleil finished a distant second, a short-head in front of Champayne Lady, and the top-raed Maria's Benefit, who finished fourth.

Laurina successfully stepped up to Grade 1 level against her own sex at Fairyhouse on he next run, and remains unbeaten for Mullins as she prepares for the 2018 Cheltenham Festival, where she features among the favourites in the Champion Hurdle betting.
