Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs Marcos Maidana Betting Preview

SHARE

Floyd Mayweather will step into the ring on May 3 for his bout with Marcos Maidana just four wins away from matching Rocky Marciano's storied 49-0 career record. The world's highest paid athlete last fought in September, a majority decision victory over Saul Alvarez. Opposing Mayweather will be Argentine Marcos Maidana, the current WBA Welterwight Champion.

Mayweather the Clear Favourite

Mayweather currently sits as a heavy favorite in the fight, with bookmakers pegging him as a 1/10 favorite or steeper. Maidana, for his part, has had some success as an underdog recently, most prominently in his December defeat of Adrien Broner. Entering the Broner fight Maidana was a 3/1 underdog who many thought could only emerge victorious with a knockout. Maidana surprised many by winning via unanimous decision in a match that saw him knock Broner down twice. That victory gave Maidana the WBA Welterweight title, which will be on the line against Mayweather.

Maidana Looking for More than a KO

Much like the discussion prior to his fight with Broner, many around the boxing betting world expect Maidana to try and win via knockout. The Argentine has spent the build-up dismissing that thought, claiming he is preparing to go 12 rounds with the man many regard as the best pound-for-pound boxer on the planet. "I am preparing to hurt him every time that I throw punches," Maidana said recently, "And if the knockout comes, then great. But I am preparing myself to win up to 12 rounds." Other fighters such as Ricky Hatton and Diego Corrales have entered fights with a strategy of attacking Mayweather in pursuit of a knockout, and both of those fights ended in technical knockouts for Mayweather, information which may be playing a role in the way Maidana and his camp approach the May 3 tilt.

Mayweather's Advantage

Despite the confidence coming from Maidana's camp, there is a reason Mayweather is undefeated and widely considered the best boxer alive. Mayweather is quick in every way in the ring, and he is a refined boxer in very sense. Maidana may well be the best puncher Mayweather has ever faced, but he may be just that: a puncher and not a boxer. Mayweather's quickness will make it difficult to land any blows, and if Floyd can dance around and tire Maidana out early, another TKO may be in the offing for this fight.

Floyd Mayweather fights Marcos Maidana on May 3 live on pay-per-view from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Mayweather's WBC and The Ring Welterweight titles are on the line as well as Maidana's WBA Welterweight championship. To place a bet on your boxer of choice, head over to Winner Sports now!
