Football Betting Strategy: Anytime Goalscorer Market

When trying to make a profit from football betting, backing star strikers to find the net during a match can seem like the easy option, but low odds on these players to score anytime can mean that you don't always get value for money. When playing the 'anytime goalscorer' market, it's worth considering players who take free kicks and penalties, or those that are a threat from corners and set pieces. Goalscoring midfielders and defenders are often available to back at much longer odds, so it can be a good idea to keep track of who takes what for which team. Here are a few things to look for when picking a higher-odds player in the 'anytime goalscorer' market.

Free Kick Specialists

Most teams have a designated free kick taker with the ability to score from set pieces. While Cristiano Ronaldo may immediately spring to mind, attacking players like him score so often that their odds in the 'anytime goalscorer' market are not very attractive. In football betting, it can pay to look for players who are capable of scoring from free kicks, but who rarely find the net in open play. Seb Larsson and Leighton Baines are great examples of this, with Baines scoring seven times in 44 appearances in the 2010/11 season - quite a return for a defender. Defenders with set piece responsibilities, such as Baines or David Luiz, can come with tempting odds and may be worth a punt as an anytime scorer.

Penalty Takers

Backing a team's penalty taker to score anytime can be a decent way of making returns from your football betting efforts. Odds on a player scoring are usually reduced if he's known to take penalties, so, as with free kicks, look for players who don't score often but are designated spot kick takers. Mikel Arteta and Mark Noble are good examples of players who mainly get on the scoresheet from the spot, with Arteta scoring eight times in 41 appearances for Arsenal in 2011/12.

Goal-Scoring Defenders

Teams normally get the defenders up from the back for corners and attacking free kicks, so it's worth considering a flutter on one of the big men to score if the odds are right. In the 2011/12 season, John Terry for Chelsea (6 goals/ 31 apps) and Thomas Vermaelen for Arsenal (6 goals/ 29 apps) scored six goals each in the league - considerable tallies for centre backs, making them potentially rewarding 'anytime goalscorer' bets, given that defenders are often priced at at least 10/1 in this market.

High-Scoring Midfielders

Danger men from midfield will usually have less-attractive odds than some of their more defensive teammates, but they're much more likely to register on the scoreboard. Midfielders such as Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard have often hit at least double figures for the season in the past, and attacking midfielders with a nose for goal like these two can therefore provide you with decent returns over the course of a season.

Of course, nothing's ever certain in football betting, but keeping those fingers crossed and doing a little research on likely scorers that have been overlooked by sports bookmakers could earn you a tidy profit.
